Summer at Trinity Cathedral
The Second Sunday after Pentecost
June 23, 2019
Summer has finally arrived, and the church year enters the "green season" of Sundays after Pentecost. Since our Cathedral Choir takes a well deserved break during the summer months, choral leadership is provided by members of our Trinity Cathedral Schola Cantorum during June and August and by our Summer Choir during July.
To mark each change in seasons, our service music changes. During the summer months, we will sing the tuneful, accessible mass setting by Robert Powell (b. 1932). A native Mississippian, Powell is an organist and choir director who has published over 300 works for organ, choir, voice, handbells, and instrumental ensembles. Known for his practical approach to composition, his music is easily learned by choirs and congregations. His Mass in F was composed in 1975 for use by his congregation at Christ Church, Greenville, South Carolina. The setting, selected for inclusion in The Hymnal 1982, is noted for its accessibility and rhythmic vitality.
Our psalms will be sung using Simplified Anglican Chant. This style of chanting the psalms first appeared in the late 19th century but was popularized the 1970s in the eastern United States. Chant tunes were composed with simplicity in mind, with melodies that can be learned quickly and easily. Composers made it clear that these tunes were not intended to replace other forms of chant, but were written to enable congregations of any size to sing the psalms in the Eucharist. The recovery of psalm singing as a normative practice was one of the principles of the liturgical movement.
Anthems this summer are often based on hymns - both familiar and lesser known. We'll hear some wonderful folk melodies from the United States and other countries, and we'll join in singing several spirituals over the course of the season.
If you've always wanted to try singing in the choir, Summer Choir is for you! On the four Sundays in July, we meet at 9:30 to prepare hymns, service music, and an anthem. The choir is open to all youth (rising 5th-12th grades) and adults. You are welcome to sing one Sunday or all four. If you're interested, please contact me at the cathedral office. Summer Choir begins in two weeks on July 7.
